Re: Housing in Winter

They will naturally search for cover if it's wet and damp and perhaps you could just leave the shed door open during the winter so they can go in there? I'm unsure of your arrangement - do they free-range around? If you cover the run will that restrict your access? I have a couple of coops in the ga...

Re: ID Tags?

I'd Google for pigeon leg tags as they seem to come with various information on them. Another way to go of course would be to get a unique colour for your chickens and alert the local vet in case yours were ever taken in. Good luck.

Re: Winding down for Winter

It's still warm here but autumn is definitely upon us. I'm chicken=sitting a friend's 10 hens that she brings over here. They know the garden well and apart from a few tussles with my resident flock they all get on OK. However, with a total of 18 laying hens, I'm getting an average of four a day. To...

Re: Rescued chicken breed and sex?

Hi there and welcome to the forum. Well I'm no expert and there are plenty on this site who are - and who hopefully will come along later and reply authoratitvely - but it looks to me like a common old garden farm hen. I have plenty of these, mostly runaways from the local egg farm down the road. Th...

Re: Help! What to do for the best??

My cockerel was an excellent dad and wanted to be near the eggs and the babies ... I'd say as long as they are with an adult to protect them from other adults and predators then fine. 5 weeks is about the time the mother wants to have her freedom back !

Re: Clever Coop Company/Plastic houses

Looks interesting, I'd never heard of them before so can't comment. Certainly the plastic panels look quite substantial. I have a GreenFrog which took quite a lot of time to assemble although all joints have metal snap clips and it is quite solid (and very heavy). Red Mite have only made an occasion...

Re: Diy chicken shelter ideas?

Could you get a piece of heavy duty tarpaulin, roll it up and attach one side of it permanently to the fence/wall at one side of the coop ... when it's raining then pull it down at 45degrees to the fence and secure it to the ground with tent pegs so they have a little triangular bolthole?

Re: Removing broody from chicks - How do I do it and when?

You'll find that eventually mum will start rejecting the chicks and they'll do their own thing. I kept mum and chicks separated from the flock for about six weeks although within sight. Eventually I'd let them out to forage on the grass and mum was very protective and flew at any hen that came close...

Re: nest boxes

Hi Scott and welcome to the forum. I'd say you have the right amount of nest boxes ... I have two for seven hens and it seems ample. Sometimes they queue up to lay an egg if the box is occupied, sometimes two of them squash in together, but it's never been a problem. They don't all lay at the same t...

Re: Pekin killed

So sorry for your loss but my first thought was also that a hawk might have been responsible, eating what it could as the chicken would be too heavy to carry back. I'm not sure what advice to offer to deter birds of prey ... hopefully somebody else will come along with some better ideas.
