The spring is the ideal time of year to hatch chicks so it would be a good idea to read up as much as possible through the winter so that you can provide suitable accommodation and equipment and are not caught out if she suddenly decides to go broody again in the spring.

Like you, I've kept polands, great characters and maybe I've been lucky but I've only lost 2 not down to old age, but I've also had orps (can be susceptible to mareks, though its not common) and sussex (bombproof). Other breeds which are pretty robust include dottes, RIR, welsummers and plymouth roc...

Eventually I'd let them out to forage on the grass and mum was very protective and flew at any hen that came close. Eventually as the chicks got more confident and wandered off, and mum let them go, they just seemed to merge with the group. The sole cockerel by the way was an excellent father, wande...
