Moving hens to new coop?

Hi, and thank you for any tips. I currently have 7 hens split between two coops. My plan is to move them into the one coop (big enough for 15 hens) The birds are all matey and the new coop will be located in the same area they are accustomed to. The area is relatively secure but impossible to keep t...

Hens first egg?

Hi,I have a twenty week old Cotswold Legbar that has yet to produce an egg. She has been sitting in the nest box for an hour each afternoon for the last 4 days, then she moves out without laying!
Has anyone had this before? he isn't in any distress and she is eating well.
Thank you.

Re: Layers sample bags?

Thanks henwife and hen-gen. The hens have not been eating eggs laid in the nest box as the birds are laying them anywhere but the nest box! They sit in the box for 20 minutes then walk out and lay them in the middle of nowhere. The coop is new and red mite clear. The boxes are dark and comfy. Fortun...

Re: Layers sample bags?

Just to add, the birds are all eating well, plenty of space and access to grit etc all day. The nest boxes were used a couple of times prior to one of the hens laying on the floor a couple of times. This give the hens a taste and now they seem to think the eggs are a special treat,,,

Re: Layers sample bags?

Well, we have two of the six laying but the eggs are getting eaten. The two layers seem to drop the eggs on the ground then immediately they all get stuck in to eating them! I've tried English mustard, chill is and Tabasco sauce inside blown eggshells but it hasn't done any good. Can anyone offer ad...

Re: Layers sample bags?

I am pretty certain I got two eggs from the same bird this afternoon, one egg collapsed in the nest box with a paper thin shell and the other one nice and firm! Any one had this type of thing happen? Thank you once again.

Re: Layers sample bags?

Thank you for all the comments. Alfamix has pellets in with the concoction but the birds eat all the seeds first then only when theres nothing else they will eat the pellets begrudgingly. I have stopped all the treats and will not feed them until they have eaten more pellets. The floor of the run is...

Hi, I am currently feeding my 22 week old birds on Garvo Alfamix. They enjoy eating everything but the pellets!! As yet they have not laid an egg,,,
Does anyone please have knowledge of where I can purchase a few samples of feed to try before I waste more money?

Re: Garvo Alphamix

Hen-gen, it didn't cost as much as THAT, did you google " most expensive alfamix in the UK",do you really need to see a picture? If you can imagine the equivalent of a Heston Blumenthal starter, followed by a Simon Rogan main couse and a Roux Bros inspired dessert all in a chicken formulated feed th...

Garvo Alphamix

I have just bought a bag of Garvo Alphamix, it does seem a tad expensive compared to other feeds. Has anyone used this and did you find it beneficial?
